GoPro just shipped an unusable camera – GoPro Hero 13

Today, Sept 9th, I was very exited to receive my GoPro Hero 13. I wanted to try out the new (to me) LOG HDR recording capabilities, as I prefer that mode with my Sony FX30. I even paid for the expedited shipping to make sure I got it in time for my next photo shoot.

Pulling it out of the box, there was a big sticker attached to the back of the camera. “Your camera must be updated before you can use it.” Which is extremely disappointing to see on any product, knowing they shipped it in an incomplete format, not waiting for it to be production ready when sent out.

However it’s not the end of the world. I already have a GoPro account and Quik app installed on my phone for my older Hero 11. It also required the SD card to be installed before the update could happen, so I unpackaged and put in a fresh one of those as well.

I opened my Quik app and tried to connect it. The app found the camera quickly, and was promptly greeted with this message: “Update Required. Update to the newest version of the app to pair this camera.”

Annoying, but also somewhat expected. New camera means they would need to update their phone software as well. Except…they haven’t yet.

No update on the Google Play store since Aug 8th. I forced a manual update check, and even restarted the phone. Sadly, I am currently stuck with a very expensive paperweight. And a totally wasted $25 on expedited shipping.

So buyer beware, make sure the Quik app is showing the Hero 13 as a possible camera to connect before you rush out and buy one!
